Fall 2024 Update

I apologize that it has been a few months since my last update. The Fall brought a lot of activity and appointments, so finding time to sit down and write has been challenging.

But that also means there is a lot to share!

A VISIT TO THE DIALYSIS CLINICS

September began with a visit to London's home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis clinics. While the hope is that I will receive a transplant prior to requiring dialysis, it is also essential that I understand the options in case I do require dialysis.  It was an overwhelming experience for Jack and me, but both clinics' teams were very helpful and informative. I am happy to be informed, but I am still hoping that I will be able to avoid dialysis altogether - it is definitely life-altering!

THE WALK TO END PKD

Later in September, we also participated in the Guelph Walk to End PKD, and I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported our team. Your support means the world to me. I'd also like to thank Jack, Laurie, Parker & Olga for walking and fundraising with me. We're proud to share that the 2024 Walk to END PKD has raised more than $138,000 this year!

CHECK IN WITH THE NEPHROLOGIST & WHERE I’M AT IN THE PROCESS

I also saw my nephrologist in late September to continue to monitor my kidney function as well as discuss the next steps, which include various tests that are part of the pre-transplant workup.

Many of you have asked about the process, so I'll give you a short version. I have begun the pre-transplant workup.  Note that this does not mean I will get a transplant.  This process is done to evaluate my health and fitness for transplant surgery.  It is thorough and includes an ECHO, ECG, Cancer screening, bloodwork, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans.  I have completed almost all of this testing over the fall months and have one more test in early January.  Once all the tests are complete, they will schedule a meeting with the transplant team to discuss my eligibility.

At the same time, a separate team evaluates any potential donors who have come forward, but that part is anonymous, and they do not give me any information on donors. As a reminder, if you would like to understand the donor process or explore being a donor, please click here for more details.

APPOINTMENTS, TESTS & A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY!

October & November have been filled with appointments and tests, which take a toll on my energy level.  It is also challenging mentally.  For those of you who know me, I am generally a very positive person, but not being able to do the things I am used to doing takes a toll and results in feelings of guilt because of all the things that others now have to take on.  I am thankful for all the love and support from family and friends and, most of all, my husband, Jack, who has been nothing short of amazing.

I also turned 50 in November and celebrated it with a small group of close family and friends.  Thank you to Jack for planning the perfect celebration!

Barring anything unforeseen, I am free of tests, procedures & appointments now until the New Year, so I am looking forward to taking some time to relax and enjoy the holidays. I am filled with hope and anticipation for what the New Year may bring.

P.S. I know everyone is busy with the approaching holidays, but if you are feeling moved by the goodwill of the season, one of the most generous things you could do would be to share my story with just one friend. Thank you for supporting me on this journey.
